Friday Part 3 - Iolani Palace (Continued)

August 10, 2012

Iolani Palace continued...

We were allowed to continue tot he second floor up the koa wood stairway. The stairway is the only original wood left in the palace. Normally visitors are not allowed to ascend the staircase.Due to the protective shoe covers all visitors are required to wear the staircase must be utilized single file while holding the handrail.

I thought this was a lovely statue which was rigged with electricity for lighting. Remember that electricity in a building during this time was rare and unique.

The beautiful staircase from the second floor main hallway.
 Details of the staircase.

These photos were taken from the Queen's suite of rooms. This is the door leading into the hallway.
Doors leading to other areas not open to visitors.
A beautiful table that I wanted to share.

 The Queen's bedroom.

 The Queen's quilt.
The bathing room in the suite of rooms where Queen Lili'uokalani was imprisoned.

A table in the main hallway.
The following photos are of the King's suite of rooms and offices. This was the King's library. a telephone was installed. The lighting in the house was not able to be turned on or off in each room. At the end of the evening the King would call the Chamberlain and he would turn off the lights  - which was for the entire palace.

The King's bedroom, sorry it is very difficult to see.
More photos of the King's library.
These are the hinges on the doorways - they are a work of art.
The Gold Room, also called the music room. This is a family room type of room where the family would gather to play instruments and sing.
A ship made of metal, it is lovely.
A gramophone I think. It is so beautiful.

The royal family was very musical and there is existing music they wrote and performed. Some of this can be found on YouTube. Aloha Oe is one of her most well known works. Here is a list of her compositions.

After this we descended the elevator to the basement level. The original elevator was installed in 1916 but has since been replaced with a more modern version.

To be continued...

Aloha!
